United States Mint Lowers Prices for Several 2012 Numismatic Products

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint is pleased to announce that it is reducing or maintaining 2011 prices for some of its most popular products to be offered in 2012.  The bureau was able to set these lower prices and maintain others by refining the product costing process, taking advantage of current lower prices for precious metals and negotiating better pricing from its suppliers. 

"We hope these prices will allow us to attract more Americans to coin collecting, while increasing collecting opportunities for our current customer base," said United States Mint Deputy Director Richard A. Peterson.

United States Mint Announces 2012 Presidential $1 Coin Designs

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint today announced the designs that will appear on the Presidential $1 Coins in 2012.  The obverse (heads sides) of the coins will bear striking portraits of former Presidents Chester Arthur, Grover Cleveland (first term), Benjamin Harrison and Grover Cleveland (second term). 

 

Inscriptions on the obverse of each coin include the President's name, the years of his term in office, a number indicating the order in which he served, and the inscription IN GOD WE TRUST.  The portraits of Chester Arthur and Grover Cleveland were designed and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart.  The portrait of Benjamin Harrison was designed and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill.

 

All coins in the Presidential $1 Coin Program bear a common reverse (tails side) featuring the iconic Statue of Liberty, designed and sculpted by Everhart.  Inscriptions on the reverse are $1 and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.  The year of minting, or issuance, E PLURIBUS UNUM and the mint mark are incused on the edge of the coins.

Will Nickels and Pennies Soon Disappear?

Back in December 2006, the US Mint, in yet another power grab over economic life, made it illegal to melt pennies and nickels in addition to exporting large quantities of either. Though the Mint admitted there was no evidence coin melting was occurring, this was the government's attempt at being proactive to prevent the destruction of its legally imposed currency.

 

So why the concern over people melting down coinage that supposedly belongs to them?

 

Back when the ban was implemented, the high price of copper was responsible for driving up the price of individual nickels and pennies in terms of metal content. Due to their copper content (nickels minted between 1946 and 2011 are composed of 75 percent copper and pennies minted between 1909 and 1982 are composed of 95 percent copper), both coins have a higher value as metal than as legal tender.

 

The irony in the government banning the melting of its own issued currency lies in the fact that its own actions contribute to the higher price of copper. Whenever the Federal Reserve engages in dollar easing (read: money printing), this newly printed "wealth" often translates into higher stock and commodity prices. 2011 America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin™ – Olympic National Park Available November 29

WASHINGTON - Collectors may begin ordering the 2011 America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin - Olympic National Park (Washington) on November 29 at noon Eastern Time (ET).  The current price of the coin is $229.95; however, as with all United States Mint products containing precious metals, pricing is subject to change.

 

A maximum mintage limit of 35,000 units has been set for each of the 2011 America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins.  Orders will be limited to five coins per household for the first week of sales.  At the end of one week, the United States Mint will re-evaluate this limit and either extend, adjust or remove it. 

 

The America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins are collector versions of those issued through the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion CoinTM Program.  The three-inch uncirculated coins feature the same designs that appear on the bullion coins and the corresponding circulating quarters issued through the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program.

 

The America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins are struck in .999 fine silver and display the "P" mint mark indicating production at the United States Mint at Philadelphia.  To protect the uncirculated finish, each coin is enclosed in a capsule and an attractive presentation case.  A Certificate of Authenticity is included with each coin.

New Member Appointed to Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael F. Moran to the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) based on Congressional recommendation.  He will serve a four-year term that extends to August 2015.

Mr. Moran is an award winning numismatic author, lecturer and researcher.  His works include an article about the United States Mint at San Francisco during the great earthquake of 1906, which won the American Numismatic Association's (ANA) 2006 Heath Literary Award, and the masterwork Striking Change - The Great Artistic Collaboration of Theodore Roosevelt and Augustus Saint-Gaudens.  Mr. Moran is an active member of the American Numismatic Society.  He is also a managing partner of a major building products supply company in Western Colorado.  He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees from Purdue University.

The CCAC, established by an Act of Congress in 2003, advises the Secretary of the Treasury on theme or design proposals relating to circulating coinage, bullion coinage, Congressional Gold Medals and other medals produced by the United States Mint.  The CCAC also makes commemorative coin recommendations to the Secretary and advises on the events, persons or places to be commemorated, as well as on the mintage levels and proposed designs.

The CCAC is subject to the authority of the Secretary of the Treasury.  The United States Mint is responsible for providing necessary and appropriate administrative support, technical services and advice. 

The CCAC submits an annual report to Congress and the Secretary of the Treasury, describing its activities and providing recommendations.

2011 American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coins Available September 15

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint will offer 2011 American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coins beginning at noon Eastern Time (ET) on September 15, 2011.  The one-ounce .999 silver coin is currently priced at $60.45.  As with all products sold by the United States Mint containing precious metals, pricing is subject to change.

Struck on specially burnished blanks, American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coins feature a finish similar to their bullion counterparts but carry the "W" mint mark, indicating production at the United States Mint at West Point.  Each coin is encapsulated in protective plastic and placed in a blue presentation case accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

The obverse (heads side) design of the American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin features an image of Lady Liberty in full stride enveloped in the folds of the American flag with her right hand extended and branches of laurel and oak in her left.  The reverse (tails side) design of the coin depicts a heraldic eagle with shield, an olive branch in the right talon and arrows in the left.

Lucy Hayes First Spouse Gold Coin & Bronze Medal Available September 1

The coin's obverse (heads side) was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Susan Gamble and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart.  The design features the likeness of Lucy Hayes with the inscriptions LUCY HAYES, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, 2011, 19th and 1877-1881.  The coin's reverse (tails side) was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Associate Designer Barbara Fox and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna.  The design represents Lucy Hayes' participation in the first Easter Egg Roll held at the White House.  Inscriptions are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $10, 1/2 OZ. and .9999 FINE GOLD.

United States Mint Launches New Quarter Honoring Vicksburg National Military Park

VICKSBURG, Miss. - Residents of Vicksburg and the surrounding area - including thousands of children - joined United States Mint and National Park Service officials today to celebrate the release of a new quarter honoring Vicksburg National Military Park.  The coin's reverse (tails side) design depicts USS Cairo on the Yazoo River as it looked when it served the Union Navy during the Civil War.  Inscriptions on the reverse are VICKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI, 2011 and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

United States Mint Chief of Staff Al Runnels told the crowd, which included more than 2000 school children, that the "America the Beautiful Quarters are a standing invitation for all Americans to come along on a journey to each national site" and that "today's launch starts the journey of the Vicksburg National Military Park quarters as they pass from American hand to American hand, connecting America through coins." 

In addition to Runnels and Vicksburg National Military Park Superintendent Michael Madell, participants included Sarah McCullough, Cultural Heritage Program Manager at the Mississippi Development Authority Division of Tourism, WLBT TV-3 reporter Walt Grayson, and Hinds Community College's Utica Jubilee Singers.  Following the ceremony, attendees exchanged their currency for rolls of the Vicksburg National Military Park quarter.  Those 18 years of age and younger received a free quarter to commemorate the event.  In addition to today's ceremony, the United States Mint hosted a coin forum last evening where local residents gathered to discuss U.S. coinage and learn about United States Mint coin initiatives and programs.

Vicksburg National Military Park commemorates one of the pivotal battles of the Civil War - the campaign, siege and defense of Vicksburg, Miss.  Surrender on July 4, 1863, coupled with the fall of Port Hudson, La., split the South, giving control of the Mississippi River to the North.  The museum exhibits at the park depict the hardships of civilians and soldiers during the 47-day siege of the city.  More than 1,350 monuments, a national cemetery and the restored Union ironclad gunboat, USS Cairo, mark the 16-mile tour road.  It was the first warship sunk by an electrically detonated "torpedo," which ushered in a new age of naval warfare.  Vicksburg National Military Park was first established as a national site on February 21, 1899 (30 Stat. 841).

Vicksburg National Military Park Quarter Available August 29

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint will accept orders for 100-coin bags and two-roll sets containing the Vicksburg National Military Park quarter starting at noon Eastern Time (ET) on August 29.  The bags are priced at $49.95 each and the two-roll sets at $39.95 each. 

The coins in the bags and rolls were struck on the main production floors of the United States Mint facilities at Denver and Philadelphia for use in general circulation but have never been released into circulation.  The two-roll sets (40 coins per roll) include one roll each bearing the "P" and "D" mint marks.  The special numismatic packaging displays the name "Vicksburg National Military Park," the abbreviation "MS" for Mississippi, "$10," the value of its contents, and "P" or "D" for the mint of origin.  Each canvas bag has a tag with "Vicksburg National Military Park," "MS" and "P" or "D."

United States Mint Announces Plans to Issue American Eagle 25th Anniversary Silver Coin Set

WASHINGTON - United States Mint Deputy Director Richard A. Peterson today announced plans to issue a limited-edition five-coin set to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the popular American Eagle Coin Program.  Peterson made the announcement at a coin forum held at the American Numismatic Association's World's Fair of Money® near Chicago.

The United States Mint American Eagle 25th Anniversary Silver Coin Set will include five one-ounce American Eagle Silver Coins: 

* one proof coin from the United States Mint at West  Point

* one uncirculated coin from the United States Mint at West Point

* one uncirculated coin from the United States Mint at San Francisco

* one reverse proof coin (frosted background with polished, mirror-like design elements/foreground) from the United States Mint at Philadelphia

* one bullion coin 

All five coins will be mounted in one custom-designed, highly polished, lacquered hardwood presentation case accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.  The United States Mint plans to produce up to 100,000 American Eagle 25th Anniversary Silver Coin Sets with a household order limit of 5 sets in effect.  The United States Mint expects to begin accepting orders in late October.  A price has not been set.  As with all products containing precious metals, pricing will be set as close as possible to the release date and is subject to change throughout the life of the program.

United States Mint Launches Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential $1 Coin

FREMONT, Ohio - Residents of Fremont and the surrounding area today celebrated the release of the new Presidential $1 Coin honoring their hometown hero, Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th President of the United States.

"The Presidential $1 Coin series connects us to the wellspring of our nation's greatness and the many stories that unite us," said Marc Landry, Acting Associate Director of Manufacturing at the United States Mint.  "One of those stories is captured at Spiegel Grove, the beautiful place where President Rutherford B. Hayes retired from elected office but remained a dedicated public servant, helping veterans, improving prisons and fighting for universal education."

Landry shared the stage with several state and local officials, including Thomas J. Culbertson, executive director of the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center.  The center is a compound that includes Spiegel Grove, the former President's home, and the Rutherford B. Hayes Center Library, the first Presidential library .  Members of the public who attended the event were among the first in the Nation to get the new $1 coin, which entered into circulation today.  Following the ceremony, each attendee 18 years old and younger received a Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential $1 Coin to commemorate the event, and adults exchanged their currency for 25-coin rolls of the new coin.

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential $1 Coin is the 19th release in the United States Mint Presidential $1 Coin Program, authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005.  The coin's obverse (heads side) bears a bold portrait of former President Hayes by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart with the inscriptions RUTHERFORD B. HAYES, IN GOD WE TRUST, 19TH PRESIDENT and 1877-1881.  The coin's reverse (tails side), also by Everhart, features a dramatic rendition of the Statue of Liberty with the inscriptions $1 and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.  The inscriptions E PLURIBUS UNUM, 2011 and the mintmark ("P" or "D") are incused on the coin's edge.

Hayes was born in Ohio in 1822.  He was educated at Kenyon College and Harvard Law School.  At the onset of the Civil War, Hayes volunteered his services and was appointed to the rank of major.  When he was discharged in 1865, Hayes, who was wounded in action four times, was promoted to the rank of major general for "gallant and distinguished services."  While he was still in the Army, Hayes was elected to the House of Representatives, where he served until 1867.  Subsequently, he served three terms as the Governor of Ohio.  In 1876, Hayes became the Republican candidate for President.  Despite losing the national popular vote, he prevailed by one vote in the Electoral College, becoming the Nation's 19th President.  Hayes announced in advance that he would serve only one term.  True to his word, he retired to Spiegel Grove at the end of his term in 1881.  He died in 1893.

Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee Seeks New Members

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint is seeking applicants for appointment to the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC).  There are two open positions - one who is specially qualified by virtue of his or her education, training, or experience in numismatic curation and one representing the interests of the general public in the coinage of the United States.  The application deadline is September 15, 2011.  The United States Mint will review all applications and forward recommendations to the Secretary of the Treasury for consideration and appointment. 

The CCAC was created to advise the Secretary of the Treasury on the selection of themes and design proposals for circulating coinage, bullion coinage, Congressional Gold Medals and other medals.  The CCAC also advises the Secretary with regard to the events, persons, or places to be commemorated by the issuance of commemorative coins, as well as mintage levels and proposed designs of commemorative coins.

The CCAC is composed of 11 members-one specially qualified in numismatic collection curation; one specially qualified in the medallic arts or sculpture; one specially qualified in American history; one specially qualified in numismatics; three individuals representing the interests of the general public; and four individuals recommended by the Leadership of both the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate.  CCAC members serve terms of four years and are Special Government Employees, who are subject to applicable conflict of interest laws and ethics regulations.

Individuals wanting to be considered for appointment as the CCAC member who is specifically qualified in numismatic curation or as a member representing the interests of the general public,  should submit a letter, along with a resume or curriculum vitae, detailing specific educational credentials, skills, talents and experience.  Applicants must specify the position for which they would like to be considered.  Applications should be submitted by fax to 202-756-6830, or by mail to the United States Mint, 801 9th St., N.W., Washington, DC 20001, Attn:  Andrew Fishburn.  Submissions must be postmarked no later than September 15, 2011.

Each roll of Presidential $1 Coins contains 25 circulating quality coins from either the United States Mint facility at Philadelphia or Denver.  The coins are wrapped with United States Mint coin paper displaying the mint of origin ("P" or "D"), "$25" (the face value of its contents) and the name of the President.

United States Mint to Participate in American Numismatic Association’s 2011 Chicago World’s Fair of Money®

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint announced today that it is attending the American Numismatic Association's (ANA) World's Fair of Money Convention August 16-20 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill.  The bureau will be located at booth #1777.

Opening day events on Tuesday, August 16 include the official ribbon cutting ceremony at 8:45 a.m. Central Time (CT), in which Treasurer of the United States Rosie Rios will participate.  Following the ceremony, Treasurer Rios will hold a public forum at the World Mint Stage at 11 a.m. to answer questions and discuss issues affecting the United States Mint, Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and Department of the Treasury.

On Friday, August 19 at 1 p.m., United States Mint Deputy Director Richard A. Peterson will host a public coin forum at the World Mint Stage and sign autographs at booth #1777.

United States Mint Announces Launch Ceremony Dates for Quarters Honoring Vicksburg National Military Park and Chickasaw National Recreation Area

WASHINGTON - August typically signals the end of summer, but there are still enough pleasant days left to enjoy the serenity of our Nation's pristine national parks and sites.  Vicksburg National Military Park in Mississippi will be the site of the launch ceremony for the new America the Beautiful Quarters® Program coin struck in the park's honor.  The ceremony will take place Tuesday, August 30 at the USS Cairo Museum located on the grounds of the park.  The ceremony starts at 9:30 a.m. Central Time (CT). 

In November, Oklahomans and the rest of the Nation will have two things to celebrate:  the 104th anniversary of the Oklahoma's admission into the Union and the release of the new quarter honoring Chickasaw National Recreation Area.  The launch ceremony will take place Wednesday, November 16 at The Point at the Lake of the Arbuckles boat launch parking lot in Sulphur, Okla.  The ceremony starts at 11 a.m. CT.

Both events include a coin exchange after the ceremony where participants can exchange their cash for rolls containing the honored site's new quarter.  Children 18 years old and younger will receive a free quarter to commemorate the event.

Additionally, the United States Mint will hold a coin forum the evening before each quarter launch ceremony where the public can discuss future U.S. coinage and learn about United States Mint initiatives and coin programs.  Information about the coin forums will be available in the coming weeks.
