Time to can David Riccardo and the ideological mantra of free trade?

The question really is, does free trade work? Does Riccardo's law of comparative advantage truly provide some sort of pareto optimality, i.e, net benefits to both, or is it too simplistic to be of any use other than to examine very specific industries?

I keep remembering GWB pitching NAFTA and always wondering ( having a graduate degree in International Political Economy from the Maxwell School at Syracuse ) how in Heaven's name it would benefit us. Growing up in " GM country " and watching the manufacturing jobs in our area first slowly walk, and then finally run away, I wondered what type of jobs would come back in to fill the void. (Read on)
